Mayor Garcetti launches Comeback Checks to provide economic relief for businesses impacted by the pandemic

Mayor Eric Garcetti launched the Comeback Checks Grants Program, which will provide 5,000 small businesses with a $5,000 grant to address negative economic impacts caused by the COVID-19 crisis.

“Our small businesses reflect our best values as Angelenos — courage, hard work, and a commitment to serving our neighbors,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “With this investment, the City is doubling down on our work to help small businesses recover and thrive.”

This $25 million investment was made possible through American Rescue Plan funds. Awardees can use the grant for employee payroll and benefits, rent, utilities, insurance, and more.

"The Comeback Checks grant program provides a much-needed boost for the City's mom-and-pop shops, local restaurants, and small businesses to rebound. Angelenos are resilient, and these grants offer our small businesses financial support to fortify and propel their journey toward economic recovery," said Carolyn Hull, General Manager of the City's Economic and Workforce Development Department.

To be eligible, businesses must be located in the City of Los Angeles with an active Business Tax Registration Certificate (BTRC). Applicants will be chosen through a randomized selection process and awarded grant funds following a successful review of all required materials. The Los Angeles Economic & Workforce Development Department (EWDD) will administer three rounds of funding.

This is the latest in the Mayor's efforts to lift small businesses up during the pandemic. In the past year, the City of Los Angeles launched the Small Business Microloan Program, the LA Recovery Fund, and small business grants, distributing over $56 million in grants and loans to businesses and microentrepreneurs.

Later this winter, the City will provide $12 million in Rental Assistance to further aid in the economic recovery of L.A.’s small businesses.

In September, through a partnership with Money Management International (MMI), Mayor Garcetti announced a program to provide small business owners with counseling, education, and debt repayment assistance to help with their economic recovery from the pandemic.
